Why You Should Be Using Cuticle Oil

From handling household chores like washing dishes to the daily typing on keyboards, our hands play a crucial role in our daily activities. Constant exposure to elements, handwashing, cleaning agents, and environmental dirt can take a toll, leaving our hands, nails, and cuticles susceptible to dryness. Enter cuticle oil – a savior for parched cuticles. Not only does it enhance the appearance of cuticles, but it also contributes to overall nail health, promoting daily comfort.

What Is Cuticle Oil?

Cuticle oil is a blend of oils, vitamins, and nourishing ingredients specifically designed for direct application to the cuticle—the thick skin layer surrounding the base of your nails. Essential for maintaining nail health, cuticles serve as a protective barrier against bacteria and fungus, while also enhancing nail moisture and preventing breakage.

Factors such as handwashing, exposure to dry air, and harsh cleansing agents often lead to dry cuticles. This is where the importance of actively moisturizing with cuticle oil comes into play, as highlighted by nail artist Alena Monson.

"The daily use of cuticle oil forms the foundation for promoting strong, healthy nails," she emphasizes. "It effectively softens cuticles, stimulates nail growth, and guards against breakage by enhancing nail elasticity and durability."

While cuticle oil formulations vary, they typically feature ingredients like sweet almond and/or jojoba oil, along with vitamin E. Some versions may include essential oils, perfumes, and additional vitamins to further nourish and moisturize.

According to Monson, "Everyone should, at the very least, use some form of moisturizer on their cuticles and nails. Given that we often use our nails as tools throughout the day, this practice offers a level of protection. The beauty of cuticle oil lies in its purposeful design to address cuticle and nail concerns, making it the ultimate moisturizer for the task."

How to Apply Cuticle Oil

Using cuticle oil is incredibly straightforward. Apply a small drop of oil near the cuticle on each finger, and gently massage it into the nail and cuticle using your fingertips.

Many oils are occlusive, meaning they sit on top of the skin to help lock in moisture rather than fully absorbing. (Dry oils like rosehip and camellia absorb better.) If you're using this type of oil, Alena Monson suggests leaving it on for as long as possible, as washing your hands can remove the oils from your skin.

Aim for application at least once a day, ideally in the evenings before bedtime.
